Harrods is the world's most famous luxury department store. I picked up that description from their website, but it really is true. The store exudes luxury. www.merriam webster.com defines exudes as "to cause to ooze or spread out in all directions." I have been to Harrods. It is over one million square feet of luxury oozing and spreading out in all directions. Watch your step. Wear boots.
The first store opened in 1849 at 8 Middle Queen's Building. Construction of the current building on Brompton Street was finished in 1906. When you shop in Harrods you are in a building that was built before either of the world wars. I find that thrilling.
See that man in the green coat? He's a doorman. In 1910, the first green-clad doormen were hired. They become known as...wait for it..."The Green Men."
They say The Green Men can turn you back for not dressing appropriately. They say the word “appropriately” can be interpreted in different ways. Probably you should just dress like the people in this photo, just to be safe. Although the Green Man does seem to turning away that lady in the reddish hat. Wonder what she did.
1911 newspaper ad aimed at international visitors coming to London for King George V Coronation. If you're into fonts, you'll notice that we don't use these fonts much anymore in ads. If you're not into fonts you won't have any idea what I'm talking about.
