Oops. Wrong Butler.
Sadly, not this one either.
Ah! That's the ticket.
So you think you want to be a butler, huh? Let's see how you feel about the job description:
As butler, you are top dog in the household. You are responsible for making sure the whole house runs smoothly, and for overseeing all the servants—although the housekeeper works side by side with you and heads up the female servants. In addition, you are in charge of the wine cellar, the butler’s pantry—which is where the family plate and silver are kept—and the downstairs books.
It’s you who has the most contact with the family and manages relations between upstairs and down. Your suite of rooms is as close as possible to the main rooms of the manor—so you will be available at a moment’s notice. This is a fulltime position so you must be single; how can you run a household if you have other people depending on you?
You will be called by your last name. Just your last name. Although servants must use “Mr.” to show proper respect for your position.
In case you missed it, in this job you have no life of your own. No first name either. Not sure if these things matter to you but thought I'd mention it.
