Earlier this morning we walked from Barnstaple to Fremington Quay, then took a bus to Bideford. A kind and gentle older man on the bus convinced us to get off at Bideford because, he insisted, Bideford is so much nicer than Appledore. So now we are walking the route from Bideford (which we didn't like at all), to Appledore, which we hope is better.

The South West Coastal Path is well marked, usually with a little acorn, which is a point of disagreement between us and our British friend and fellow hiker Susanne. Bob and I say the acorn is upside down. Susanne says of course it isn't, because that's how acorns grow on trees. Hmmm.

The path from Bideford to Appledore is fairly flat and not hugely interesting. We go through wooded areas and town streets and along the coast and through some marshland. It's 4 1/4 miles, which, on top of the 2 we did from Barnstable to Fremington, will be enough.

We reach Appledore and are curious to see whether the village is as bad as our Italian friend says it is, although as he thinks Bideford quaint and we don't, it stands to reason that we will like Appledore.

This fish & chip place was recommended in our coastal path book. It's ​excellent! The freshest fish ever.

Pretty much all we do in Appledore is walk up and down the little passageways (you can't really call them streets) taking photo after photo of this marvelous little village, which we love!
