Portloe to Portscatho

5/18/2023

We set off at 8:30 this morning, heading west to fill in this last section on this part of the south coast. We walk from our cottage in Treviskey down to the harbor to hook up with the South West Coast Path.

The path begins in the middle of the village.

Portloe is a working fishing village. These lobster & crab pots bring seafood to shops and restaurants all over the area.

We see a sheep sneaking back into the field from exploring on the other side of the barbed wire fence.

Easy to tell which one is the escapee, no?

Looking back. That headland in the far distance is Dodman Point; we walked around that yesterday on the way to Gorran Haven.

A bunker left from WW2.

We reach the top of the big headland that was always waaay in the distance. The tiny village across the bay on the far left is Portscatho, our goal for the day. We try to guess how far it is and how long it will take to get there. In the end it will take three hours to walk around this bay, a distance of five miles. (Things are always farther away than you think on the coast path.)

We arrive at Porthscatho. Total miles: 10.4. We swim in the Portscatho harbor, water temperature: 51. A shock to the system but also invigorating!

On one of our trips to England Bob and I discover the South West Coast Path. Life has never been the same. Now our goal is to walk the whole 630-mile hike, one path, pub, cider, and cream tea at a time. This blog follows our May 2023 trip.
