Trevone to Mawgan Porth

5/15/2023

This morning we took a bus to Porthcothan, same place we started yesterday, and walked the opposite direction, toward Padstow. It was a glorious day. Windy as all get-out, with a serious chill in the air, but sun from start to finish!
Picture
This little cafe is just off the road to Porthcothan beach. We stopped here yesterday and had a marvelous apricot and oat treat so we had to stop again today for another one! (Of course!)
Picture
Yesterday we walked the path on the other side of the beach. Today we're walking this side.

Our first goal is that lighthouse way over there on the left.

Erosion is a constant problem along the South West Coast Path. As cliff edges topple down to the sea, fences are put up to keep people away from the edge and the path is moved inland.

Lots of gates to keep livestock in (or out),

I marked this "Round O Hole" on our guide book because of course we want to see the "spectacular hole in the middle of a field."
Picture
The hole did not disappoint. Look at the scale compared to the walkers!

The path moves from clifftop to beach throughout the walk.

This was not so much fun. We reached Trevone and realized the bus to Padstow wasn't for another 90 minutes. Normally we'd hang at the cafe and eat and drink but we had our minds set on getting seafood at Rick Stein's in Padstow.
Picture
We had walked the coast path from Padstow to Trevone a few years back and because We. Don't Do. Paths. Twice. we had no interest in walking it again. We tried to get a taxi but no go. In the end we had to walk an extra 2.5 miles down this lane to get to Padstow and dinner. This brought our mileage for the day to 11.

Tired but happy that we made it to Rick Stein's.

Scallops that melt in your mouth.

Thick, generous slab of fresh-caught cod.

The creamiest ice cream we've ever had. Defintely decadent.

Mooching around Padstow until the bus comes.

The original Revenue and Customs House for Padstow was probably built around the 1700s. It was extended in mid 1800s and again in early 1900s. This is where government officials would have collected customs duties for goods imported into and exported from the port of Plymouth.

Treats and water for the dogs, who are always welcome!

Ha! "Still not coffee"!

Still to go this trip. Hopefully.

On one of our trips to England Bob and I discover the South West Coast Path. Life has never been the same. Now our goal is to walk the whole 630-mile hike, one path, pub, cider, and cream tea at a time. This blog follows our May 2023 trip.
