Sennen
|
Sennon, population of ~180, is widely considered one of the most beautiful spots in the UK, blending rugged Atlantic scenery with a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. The photo above is our first view of the lone village and one of my all time favorite Cornwall photos. You can see the 1.5 mile walk from Land's End to Sennen here. During our second visit, the weather was wild, with tough Cornish souls braving the ferocity of frightening waves.
Whitesands Bay is a long stretch of fine, golden sand that looks almost tropical when the sun hits the turquoise water. Unlike many of the rocky inlets in Cornwall, Sennen offers a wide, expansive beach that is perfect for walking, especially at low tide when it joins up with neighboring Gwynver Beach. Sennen is famous for its consistent surf. Because it faces the full force of the Atlantic, it picks up swells that other beaches miss. It's home to several highly regarded surfing schools, making it a popular spot for both seasoned pros and beginners. Look closely and you'll see two fearless swimmers!
The village feels remote and "edge of the world", while retaining a traditional fishing village charm that includes:
The Old Lifeboat House: A historic building that serves as a reminder of the area’s treacherous waters. The Round House: (Bottom photo above.) A distinctive 19th-century building originally used for capstans to haul fishing boats up the slipway. It now houses The Roundhouse and Capstone Gallery. The houses here look tough and brave. Like they've seen the worst a foul-tempered sea can throw out and have come out unscathed. You have to admire that in a house.
We lose track of time and in the end have to run like the wind to catch the bus, which only comes once an hour, and which we manage to flag down only by running wildly after it, arms waving frantically as the passengers inside, who managed to get to the bus stop on time, turn their heads to stare blankly at us. It is not our finest moment.
On our second trip here, we intended to walk Sennen to Pendeen Watch. However, we look at the guidebook outlining the path ahead, look at each other, decide we are just too weary, and end up relaxing on the beach.
